Language Training and Skills Development

What We Do

The Language program facilitates the integration of newcomers into Canadian culture and society by providing basic language training based on Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs). Students are taught basic and advanced topics related to Canada and Canadian society, while learning English at the same time.

The Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women offers Pre-CLB levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as CLB levels 1-4 in part-time classes to meet the needs of students. All classes have a duration time of 90 minutes and are offered as either Reading & Writing, or Listening & Speaking. Our morning classes run from 9:00am to 10:30am and 10:35am to 12:05pm, while afternoon classes run from 12:30pm to 2:00pm and 2:05pm to 3:35pm.

Pre-CLB levels 1-3

Teach speaking, listening, reading, writing and numeracy skills to adults who have little or no literacy skills, or are semi-literate in their own language, or whose first language uses a non-Roman alphabet. Students learn to give adequate basic responses to questions, communicate basic needs, and engage in routine everyday communication.

CLB levels 1-4

Improve the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of students and move their performance levels to an initial intermediate stage. Students engage in intelligible and communicatively effective social interactions. At these levels, they demonstrate an ability to function in unpredictable as well as predictable contexts.

Seniors: CLB Levels 1-4

The four competency areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing are practiced in these classes at the CLB 1-4 levels. These courses focus on topics relevant to seniors and are designed to accommodate their learning needs and styles.
